When I formed SHAK in 2006, I knew what I was creating had to be completely different to anything else out there.
I had to save lives like other charities do, but it needed to be right at the cutting edge of rescue. The ultimate safety net for those dogs nobody else could or would save.
It has worked incredibly well. With the help and support of likeminded, amazingly supportive people, we have saved the lives of hundreds if not into the thousands of dogs. I have never kept a record of numbers, its just always been a case of saving the next one.
The issues we have encountered along the way have varied between behavioural, health and of course aggression. Some we never get to find out their histories, but the ones we do have always suffered at the hands of people. They are victims of mistreatment, neglect and abuse.
Fast forwarding to the present day, 2024 is the bleakest time I have ever known for man’s best friend.
Running the rescue is becoming an impossible task. The world we live in has changed dramatically, and not for the better. Everywhere animals of all kinds are suffering more than ever.
The horror stories I witness and hear daily have taken things backwards. We are now right back to where I was when a started this. We have gone a full circle and dogs are dying needlessly.
So I am bringing the darkness back into the light. I am no longer going to hide the sad truth behind every set of beautiful eyes which stare at me and my team every day.
I want people to understand the damage which has been done to the dogs we are lucky enough to spend our lives with. The horrors they have lived through and the treatment which nearly lead to them losing their lives.
I WANT PEOPLE TO RELATE
Mental health awareness is massive these days, and rightly so. However, when it comes to dogs (and other animals) it is given very little consideration.
We all have aspects of life which effect our mental health. We all have issues which have developed us into the people we are. We all have scars and wounds which may never heal.
So do our dogs. They too react to past traumas. They struggle to understand why and to trust. It also takes them time to heal.
So, with the above in mind, I am working on some new SHAK merchandise to try and help people understand. So we can all resonate.
This design is the first.
Because of the current economic crisis our country is facing, we simply do not have available funds to order these in bulk. Therefore, they are only available to buy on line and then printed to order.
